The best way to avoid the expense and hassle of dental problems is with regular check-ups and professional cleanings.

Professional dental cleanings and exams

There are many types of dental cleanings, and after being examined by Dr. Dougherty, together we will decide which one is the right one for you. Most people only require cleanings every six months but there are conditions that may necessitate more frequent or "deeper" cleanings.

Periodontal screenings

periodontal disease

"Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth."
– American Academy of Periodontology

With each new patient exam and annually thereafter, every adult patient's periodontal health is examined. This is accomplished by either the doctor or the hygienist measuring and recording periodontal pockets. This will not only give our staff insight into the health of your mouth, it also provides us with the necessary information to properly diagnose and customize the type of cleaning each individual needs.

Routine x-rays

Stapleton Dental uses high-tech digital x-rays, reducing the amount of radiation received by the patient by 70-80%. Digital x-rays also allow us to view the x-ray instantly (instead of having to wait for development), shortening your appointment time.

Sealants

tooth sealant

We place sealants on the chewing surface of children's back teeth after they have erupted into the mouth. Sealants are a quick and painless procedure in which tooth-colored filling material is painted into the grooves of the tooth, helping to prevent the occurrence of decay. However, sealants do not prevent decay from starting on the sides or between the teeth.

Sports Mouthguards

sports mouthguard

According to the American Dental Association, anyone who participates in a sport that carries with it a risk of injury (football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, etc.) should wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards, which usually fit on the upper teeth, can cushion a blow to the face and minimize injuries to the teeth and surrounding structures in the mouth. A custom-made mouthguard offers the best protection and is a wise investment for a family to avoid the potential cost of a sports-related dental injury.
